The Great Yorkshire Show 2013

Yorkshire folk are not averse to making boasts about their county, so it’s no surprise that the Great Yorkshire Show claims to be England’s leading agricultural event. Held in Harrogate over three days from Tuesday 9th July, it represents the best of the British countryside, including livestock competitions and displays of traditional rural skills including dry-stone walling, fly fishing, gundog training.  Visitors can also enjoy fashion shows, garden shows, cookery theatres and a food hall. More than 130,000 visitors are expected to attend this year, with more anticipation than usual after last year’s event was cancelled after the first day due to torrential rain. The cancellation in the poor summer of 2012 was the first caused by weather in the show’s 154-year history, although the Second World War and the 2001 foot and mouth epidemic led to previous closures.

So why not take a short break in the Harrogate area and make the Great Yorkshire Show the highlight of your stay. There is so much to see and do in the area besides. In Harrogate itself you can enjoy afternoon tea at the famous Betty’s Tea Room, a Turkish bath at the Royal Pump Room and Baths or a wander around Harlow Carr Gardens, the most northerly of the RHS’s four flagship gardens.

Within 15 miles of Harrogate you can discover the small cathedral city of Ripon; Fountains Abbey, the largest medieval ruins in England and deservedly classified as a World Heritage Site; the Yorkshire Dales and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; or some retail therapy at Trinity Leeds, the newest shopping centre in the country in the heart of the vibrant city.
