Gloucester Tall Ships Festival

There’s nothing quite like the sight of a flotilla of majestic sailing vessels as they make their grand entrance into port. The award-winning Gloucester Tall Ships Festival will take place in the city’s Historic Docks from Friday 24 to Monday 27 May.

Cottages4You have the best selection of cottages remaining with over one hundred available across Gloucestershire with many within easy reach of Gloucester. Hoseasons still have a dozen cottages available throughout Gloucestershire for Half Term. English Country Cottages have a handful of cottages in the Gloucester/Cheltenham area.

The flotilla will enter the country’s most inland port at lunchtime on Friday 24 May, having sailed up the Severn Estuary and into the city via the Gloucester Sharpness Canal. As the ships approach Gloucester Docks, the High Orchard and Llanthony bridges will be raised to make room for those tall masts, before the ships moor in the main basin for the rest of the Festival. Visitors will be allowed to board the Tall Ships on Saturday and Sunday, before their departure on Monday. Ships confirmed include the magnificent brigantine, Phoenix, with its square-rigged foremast; the Amazon, which took part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant last year, the Ruth, a gaff-rigged sailing ship, The Matthew and the traditional rigged French ship, La Belle Angele. The festival is free and will appeal to visitors of all ages with a range of on and off water activities including live music, street entertainment, food and craft stalls, boat trips and family entertainment. Those wishing to take a closer look at the vessels will be able to buy a wristband for £5 on the Saturday and Sunday which will give access onto all the tall ships plus free admission to the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum and the Gloucester Waterways Museum.
